ALL EYES ARE ON BREEDERS. CUP
October 22, 2002
All serious sports fans have to love this time of year . NFL and college football are in full swing, baseball has reached the World Series, hockey season just started, the NBA is ready to tip off and one of my favorite events, The Breeders. Cup Classic, is rapidly approaching. Historically, The Kentucky Derby is considered the biggest day for .the sport of kings,. but from a purely wagering perspective, it doesn.t compare to The Breeders. Cup.
I find great pleasure spending the days leading up to the Breeders. Cup gathering information and handicapping the entrants in the race. It can be difficult trying to evaluate the different prep races that have taken place throughout the year . there are just so many angles and reasons why each horse has a chance to win, but if done correctly the rewards can be tremendous. Here are some things to look for at this year.s Breeders. Cup.
Favorites in the Breeders. Cup have won 47 or 129 races (36.4%). There have been 32 odds-on choices with 14 winners; 34 horses have gone off at 100/1 or greater and only Arcanques has finished in the money at 133.60-1 winning the Classic. Some of the noteworthy sires of Breeders. Cup horses include Deputy Minister, Storm Cat, Danzig, Cozzene, Kris S and Strawberry Road.
When looking for a winning horse pay particular attention to the jockeys. Pat Day is the leading money winner of Breeders. Cup races and has ridden 101 starters while guiding them to 12 wins, 15 places and 12 shows in those races. Chris McCarron recently retired after 101 Breeders. Cup starts, but rumor is that he may come out of retirement for a live horse. Jerry Bailey has become the best big money jockey in the world and figures to make a push for a Breeders. Cup win. The sleeper jockey to watch at this year.s Cup is Mike Smith who will have some really live horses under him in the stakes.
Another way to find a successful horse in the Breeders. Cup is to evaluate their trainers and owners. It should be no surprise that D. Wayne Lukas has trained the most Breeders. Cup starters and ranks first in money won in the Breeders. Cup Championship. Other trainers that will have some horses in the money include Claude McGaughey III, Robert Frankel, William Mott, Neil Drysdale and the big money trainer of recent years, Bob Baffert. Some of the more successful owners in Breeders. Cup races include Allen E. Paulson, Frank Stronach, Ogden Phipps and Eugene V. Klein.
Bettors should also do their research on how the horses have performed throughout the year. In the Breeders. Cup, Classic Medaglia d.Oro and Rock of Gibralter have the speed to take the $4 million purse. In the Distaff, look for the hot horse, Azeri, followed by Imperial Gesture and Take Charge Lady. In the Sprint, Xtra Heat will come out on fire and pull away from the field while Banks Hill or Golden Apples should make a run in the Filly Turf. In the Mile race, Rock of Gibraltar, Forbidden Apple and Lanseer are the head of the class and should finish in the money. Meanwhile bettors should keep an eye on Sky Mesa in the Breeders. Cup Juvenile. At this year.s Breeders. Cup, bettors should beware of the European invaders. The European horses look particularly strong and should thrive in the climate of Arlington which is closer to their native climates than past Breeders. Cup locations. To come out on top at this year.s Cup, remember to follow the very strong trends that lead to winners at Breeders. Cup races. Look for value, don.t always play the favorites and most of all, enjoy a spectacular day of racing.
