The Lions +5.5 gets the tentative call...By Simon Milham

A quick glance at their records and you would be forgiven for thinking that the reason the Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions always play on Thanksgiving Day, is because they are turkeys.

Apparently this is not the case.

The first American Thanksgiving is generally believed to have been in Plymouth Colony in mid-October of 1681, when William Bradford and the Pilgrims gathered with local Indians to give thanks for survival and the first harvest . around about the same time as the Cincinnati Bengals last won an NFL game.

The Detroit Lions were the first to start the tradition of playing on Turkey Day in 1934, when George Richards brought the Portsmith (Ohio) Spartans and moved them to Detroit, naming them the Lions.

That first game was against the Bears (who won 19-16) and over 25,000 spectators watched, while a national radio audience heard the call.

The Dallas Cowboys decided to cash in on tradition in 1966. Both Dallas and Detroit are having woeful seasons. Detriot somehow contrived to lose in Chicago, finding a new and creative way to lose a 14th straight game on the road, going down in overtime after electing to defend with a strong wind at their backs in Memorial Stadium.

Marty Mornhinweg.s decision to put faith in his defense, who had just given up 10 points inside the final three minutes, and 177 yards and the game winning three points in the Bears final three drives, proved a strange one to say the least. The Bears won it 20-17 in OT to snap a nine-game losing streak and condemn the Lions to a 3-8 record.

The fear is that Mornhinweg has lost the players and only the fear of embarrassment in front of Thursday.s worldwide television audience is going to prevent them from a crushing defeat at the hands of the resurgent Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.

While the Lions are looking towards next year.s draft, the visitors need the win more as they lie a game behind the Miami Dolphins in the AFC East, with a 6-5 record. The Patriots are considered 5.5-point favorites on the TradeSports Handicap line where you can wager before and during every NFL game and you can do this at the odds that you dictate. No Bookie, No VIG.

The obvious call is the Patriots to win, though the Lions are capable of putting points on the board and still New England.s run defense is suspect. It may be a tall order, but Joey Harrington may just be able to keep this close and the Lions with the points is the tentative call.
